Ingredients

Scale
  • 3 cups all-purpose flour, plus more for dusting
  • 1 cup raw walnuts
  • 1 tsp baking powder
  • 1 tsp ground cinnamon
  • 1/2 tsp kosher salt
  • 1 cup unsalted butter, softened to room temperature
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 Tbsp whole milk
  • 1 tsp pure maple syrup
  • 3/4 cup light brown sugar
  • 6 Tbsp unsalted butter (for icing)
  • 1/2 tsp maple extract or pure vanilla extract
  • 1/2 tsp pure maple syrup (for icing)
  • 1 1/2 cups confectioners’ sugar
  • Pinch of kosher salt (for icing)
  • Pinch of ground nutmeg (for icing)
  • 3 Tbsp whole milk (for icing)
  • Crushed raw walnuts and maple sugar, for serving (optional)

Instructions

  1. In a food processor, add flour and walnuts, and pulse until the walnuts are finely ground. Add the baking powder, cinnamon, and salt and pulse until combined.
  2. In a large bowl, use a handheld mixer to beat the butter and granulated sugar until fluffy. Add egg, milk, and maple syrup; continue beating until well combined. Gradually add dry ingredients and beat until no dry streaks remain. Refrigerate dough for at least 1 hour.
  3. On a floured surface, roll out dough to 1/8′ thick. Use maple-shaped cookie cutters to cut cookies and freeze for 10 minutes.
  4. Preheat oven to 350°F. Bake cookies for 10-12 minutes until lightly golden. Let them cool on the baking sheets.
  5. For icing, combine brown sugar and butter in a saucepan over low heat. Stir until sugar dissolves. Cool slightly, then add maple extract and syrup, followed by confectioners’ sugar. Add milk to reach drizzle consistency.
  6. Dip each cookie into the icing and decorate with crushed walnuts or maple sugar.
